The importance of continued agriculture growth is imperative for the future of Africa. Several experts in agriculture have provided unsettling facts and opinions on the importance of revolutionising agricultural development in Africa. “Africa’s lifeblood is agriculture, but while agriculture remains central to Africa’s economies, its global performance in this sector has lagged. Africa remains a net food importer and continues to suffer from recurrent hunger epidemics,” said Boston University’s James Kariuiki’s in The Future of Agriculture in Africa. It is this underperformance of agriculture that is at the heart of what motivates DLA to push the boundaries through its work at the farm. From Kariuiki’s point of view, the Mckinsey Global Institute estimates that Africa has 60 % of the world’s available arable land, yet only 10 % of the land is farmed. This statistic is the reason why Africa continues to be one of the largest net importers of food. Writing for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Todd Benson stated in his paper Africa’s Food and Nutrition Security Situation, “food and nutrition security remains Africa’s number one challenge for human welfare and economic growth.” These mentioned statistics and opinions articulate the reasons behind DLA Agricultural Development Programmes and why the organisation has embarked on the ambitious Project with the collaboration, support and valued partnership.
